Our founder, Carole Sherlock, volunteered to teach Catholic Montessori based Sunday School in her local Parish in Renton, Washington. Her spectacular and outstanding experience with the young children became a life-changing event and convinced her that a Montessori Teacher was what she was meant to be! Her life-long interest in Maria Montessori’s teaching methods led her to obtain a Montessori Teaching Credential in San Diego in 1970. While studying for her Montessori Credential, she enrolled her daughter Shannon and volunteered at Curie Elementary School in Harriet Stasik’s Preschool/Kindergarten/First Grade classroom for two years.
In the fall of 1975, Carole purchased the Twin Trees Preschool on Fay Avenue in La Jolla and immediately transformed the school into the Montessori School of La Jolla. Her loving relationship with the children established a special bond, which enhanced their school experience. Carole was innovative in using the Montessori principles in every phase of the childrens’ learning experience. She had exceptional patience and ability to reach and positively influence special children with social, emotional and learning difficulties. She was a mentor to her teachers through the years and has influenced many wonderful Montessori teachers. During her career, she touched thousands of young children, their families and teachers with her loving, compassionate and nurturing personality.
In 1983, Carole expanded the school with two additional classrooms at the former Decatur Elementary School site on Soledad Mountain Road. In 1986, she purchased the Montessori School of Mira Mesa. Carole owned and operated the Mira Mesa and Fay Avenue schools until they were sold in 1993. In 1998, she expanded the Soledad Mountain facility into a newly developed three-classroom site, which is currently operated by her daughter Shannon Bingham. Continuing on with school traditions makes it truly a wonderful legacy.
Carole had a natural curiosity for all things in life and learning. She had a passion for flowers and gardening. Bonsai held her interests as well as an attraction to all things of Asian influence. Carole also loved to travel, which included trips to Canada, Belgium, Spain, Italy, New Zealand and Australia. She took a special interest in her grandchildren Breanna and Alyssa’s life, which made her a wonderful “Nanny”.
Carole Sherlock founder and owner of the Montessori School of La Jolla lost her battle with cancer at home on May 8, 2003. The community has lost a truly gifted and loving Montessori Teacher. The Montessori School of La Jolla continues in her memory as a memorial.
